IN APPROXIMATELY 250 METERS, SIGNAGE BEGINS ALONG THE NATURE TRAIL (PICNIC AREA ZONE)

Nestled in the heart of Castelsilano’s territory, the Fiume Lese Nature Trail invites visitors to follow the sounds of flowing water and the scents of lush vegetation along a route where unspoiled nature meets Calabria’s industrial heritage. Stretching for approximately two and a half kilometers along the river, the trail immerses hikers in a rich natural environment, where gorges, waterfalls, and crystal-clear pools create a refreshing and captivating atmosphere.

The path, suitable even for less experienced hikers, winds through dirt tracks, rocky outcrops, and damp areas, revealing scenic views and perfect spots for rest or photography. With minimal elevation gain, the route is accessible and enjoyable, offering the thrill of exploration through canyons, caves, and dense greenery.

As you venture further, nature slowly unveils a piece of the past: hidden among the foliage lie the remains of the old hydroelectric power plant of Castelsilano, the first ever built in Calabria. Operational from 1923 to 1961, this plant played a crucial role in the electrification of the region. Today, the remnants of its buildings and machinery still stand, silently narrating a story of early innovation. Hiking the Fiume Lese trail is more than just a walk—it's an experience that blends outdoor adventure with cultural discovery. Good-grip hiking shoes are recommended, along with at least 1.5 liters of water per person. In the summer months, sunscreen and a hat are essential. Trekking poles can be helpful on slippery sections, and a GPS map, available on apps like Wikiloc or Castelsilano Borgo Experience, is highly recommended.

A hike along the Lese River offers more than natural beauty—it’s a journey through a lesser-known Calabria, where landscapes inspire awe and history emerges quietly along the way.
