The Mother Church of Castelsilano, in the province of Crotone, is dedicated to the Most Holy Immaculate Mary. Built in the early 1700s by the noble Rota family, this charming church blends simplicity and elegance in a way that will surely catch your eye. The exterior, finished in soft, light tones, features a unique stone façade inspired by traditional polished stonework. After years of careful restoration, the church has been beautifully brought back to life — and it was well worth the effort! A short staircase leads to the main entrance, where a finely carved wooden archway welcomes visitors. Look up and you’ll spot the papal coat of arms, a graceful window mirroring the arch below, and a small rose window framed by rugged stone.
Inside, the church holds treasures of remarkable beauty. Highlights include a holy water font carved from a single block of local granite, and liturgical vestments adorned with real gold embroidery. Until the 1960s, the main altar displayed a stunning painting of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven, known for its extraordinary play of light. This 18th-century masterpiece from the Neapolitan school was sadly stolen and never recovered. More recently, the church has been enhanced with exquisite Florentine-style mosaics, adding even more beauty to this peaceful and sacred place — a must-see stop for anyone exploring the heart of Castelsilano.
